Science Fiction
This week on The Children's Hour, we explore the genre of science fiction with our musical friends from Ramah, New Mexico, MeriDean. This type of storytelling allows our imagination to become immersed in other worldly places, with advanced technologies, on exoplanets, or flying through space, and using actual science to help us believe the impossible. With excerpts of famous works of "Sci-Fi" like The War of the Worlds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Slaughterhouse Five, and original pieces recorded by masterful storytellers, we immerse ourselves in futuristic fantasy.
Puppets
This week on The Children's Hour, we explore Puppets with a tribute to one of the master puppeteers on Sesame Street, The Muppets, Star Wars and more, Jim Henson, the Kids Crew talk with his daughter Cheryl Henson, and we're all treated to a one of a kind performance by the captivating Loren Kahn Puppet Theater.
Practicing Peace
How do we stay calm and centered during times of anxiety, and how do we practice being peaceful? The Children's Hour Kids Crew explore strategies together, and with Andy Mason, a singer songwriter from Santa Fe New Mexico who helps kids find their inner strength through music.
Pandemic Halloween
What could be more spooky than a pandemic Halloween? The Kids Crew are joined by Drs. Bop 'n Pop, who are on a mission to help normalize lifesaving public health behaviors for children and families through their songs and videos. We get an update from the doctors about how Covid can be contained and we find out how to have a safe Halloween, in spite of the pandemic.
Presidential Elections
This time on The Children's Hour, we learn all about how Presidential Elections work. We feature New Mexico Secretary of State, Maggie Toulouse Oliver who walks us through the election process. Then we learn all about the Electoral College with an actual elector, Dr. Pamelya Herndon. Why do we have this indirect way of voting for President and Vice President? Celebrating Indigenous People
This week on The Children’s Hour, we learn about Indigenous Peoples Day. Plus we are treated to live music from an all women mariachi band, Mariachi Flor del Alma, we’ve got a book review of Under The Cottonwood Tree, a new graphic novel for kids based on an ancient New Mexican folk tale, and the Extinction Diaries cover the bird die-off that happened late this summer in the southwestern United States.
The Post Office
On this episode of The Children's Hour, we learn all about the Post Office from the American Postal Workers Union Local 380 President, Ken Fajardo. Mr. Fajardo has worked at the United States Postal Service for over 30 years, and explains what happens when a letter goes through the mail. He also talks about the current controversies surrounding the USPS today. Plus, we meet The Children's Hour's new puzzlemaker, Riya Joshi who challenges the Kids Crew to a puzzle on the air. Also, the kids in the Extinction Diaries explain how landscaping is expediting extinctions.
Unpolluting Earth
This episode of The Children's Hour focuses on pollution, which is a problem around the globe, but there are ways to un-pollute dirty and contaminated places. How we do that is explained by chemist and journalist Dr. Marina Philip, and we check in with mycologist Peter McCoy from the world's first school for mycology, Mycologos about how mushrooms can transform some of our most toxic pollutants into building materials and more. We also hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about the problem of plastic pollution worldwide. Kids can help solve this international crisis and we learn how. This show is mixed with great music from the Beat Buds, Zee Avi, Mister G, One More Song, Ellis Paul, Earthworm Ensemble and more.
Bugs
This episode of The Children's Hour will bug you! We get bugged with the ABQ Biopark's Curator of Entomology, Jason Schaller. Jason's passion for insects is infectious. We explore Jason's stand out, favorite bugs around North America region by region. Plus we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about the plight of insects around the world. Mixed with great music, jokes, and plenty of kids commentary to entertain and educate children of all ages.

Petroglyphs
This time on The Children’s Hour, we explore petroglyphs with Ranger David Ottaviano from Petroglyph National Monument, and Todd Scissons, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer with Acoma Pueblo. Learn who made these ancient rock carvings, why they are so common in the desert Southwest, and what they mean to the people whose ancestors made them. Plus we find out about the Junior Ranger Program with the National Parks Service, and we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about a rare and nearly extinct bird from New Zealand.
