With a name like Greenland, you might expect the country to be covered with lush plants. Actually, it’s quite the opposite! When Viking Eric the Red came to the island in 982, he wanted to attract more of his countrymen and so gave it a very appealing name. Fellow Norsemen were certainly in for a surprise when they arrived to a place that is 85% covered in ice! This chilly country is brimming with beautiful culture and fascinating history, as explained by our guest, Naja Lund Aparico.

Naja is the author of the children’s book Seasons by the Lake, which takes place in her home country of Greenland. 

Although Greenland doesn’t have any trees, it is still very colorful. When buildings were first built in the country, they were color-coded so that people knew if they were going to a church, school, or some other type of building. This colorful tradition stuck throughout the years.

Most of the residents of Greenland are indigenous Inuit people who first started migrating from Canada 4,500 years ago, likely crossing the frozen sea on their journey. Naja tells us more about traditional Inuit culture and their relationships with the animals of Greenland, such as polar bears, seals, whales, and sea birds.

We also learn about how climate change has impacted Greenland and the people and animals who call it home.
