Tigers and snow leopards are two of the most mysterious cats on Earth. This time on The Children’s Hour, our Kids Crew talks with zookeepers and conservationists who work closely with these big cats. We learn where they live, how they survive in the wild, and what’s being done to keep them safe. You’ll hear how snow leopards are different from other wild cats, and how tigers are helping us understand more about protecting nature.
We meet the lead carnivore zookeeper from the ABQ BioPark, Casey Taylor who teaches us basic tiger facts, tells us about caring for tigers, and their unique behaviors. With three species of tigers are already extinct, we need to do a lot to help remaining tigers survive. Sarah Fogel at the World Wildlife Fund explains how we can help from anywhere in the world, just based on the choices we make in our purchases.
Snow leopards are elusive and difficult to study. Marissa Niranjan from the Snow Leopard Trust explains the unique challenges these big cats face as their range and numbers in the wild are greatly diminished.
To research snow leopards, scientists study high resolution photographs of the mountains in their range to track and study the cats’ movements, family groups, and hunting patterns. They use camera traps and tracking to watch these shy creatures without bothering them.
Spot the snow leopard!
As part of their research, scientists study high resolution photographs of the mountains in their range to track and study the cats’ movements, family groups, and hunting patterns. Because they are experts at blending in, they can be hard to see, even in high resolution photos.

Both tigers and snow leopards are endangered, and change and habitat loss are making it harder for all of these cats to live in the wild. But we can help them survive by telling others about how amazing these creatures are, and how zoos and conservation groups work together to save endangered species.
